  • Guinness Nigeria MD/CEO commends Lagos Governor

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Sunday, received the Premier League Trophy, saying his administration will continue to use sports as a means of engagement, social inclusion and change agent.

The trophy was officially presented to Governor Sanwo-Olu by the Managing Director/CEO of Guinness Nigeria PLC, Mr Girish Sharma, at the Lagos House, Marina.

Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu said that bringing the Premier League Trophy to Lagos showed that “there is something positive about our followership, enthusiasm, and the development of sports in our country, but more importantly in Lagos.”

He said: “We are excited that Guinness identifies with us by bringing the Premier League Trophy to Lagos. It is a trophy that everybody believes is inspirational. It is about using sports as a change agent. It is about using sports as a way of connecting to the youth demographic that we have. It is about using sports as a weapon to be able to identify the skills, capacity and capability of our young people. It is about using sports as a strong connection to be socially responsible citizens and individuals and to use it as a means of engagement.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who earlier received Sharma and his team during a courtesy call at Lagos House, Marina, said his administration will continue to make Lagos hospitable and habitable for businesses to thrive.

He said: “We are indeed happy with what the brand (Guinness Nigeria PLC) has done, especially in sports and other socially responsible areas of endeavours. We are indeed happy and excited that it is one of those companies and brands that stayed in Lagos and has grown out of Lagos to other parts of the country and other parts of West Africa. So we are happy that we continue to make Lagos home to it.

“One of the things that I am going to throw back to you is to see how some of the teams, during their summer break, can come around for two or three days. We don’t bite people, we don’t eat people, we are just fans. We just want to hug them and take a selfie with them. We want the teams to come and see millions of their fans and identify with the country and the State.

“We want to assure you that we will continue to make Lagos hospitable and habitable for businesses to do well and thrive. We will continue to make the environment worthwhile for every corporate organisation, because we know that it is by doing that that we can develop the economy, we can grow, and people can see a better life for one another.”

Speaking earlier, the Managing Director/CEO of Guinness Nigeria PLC, Mr. Girish Sharma, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and his team for the good things they are doing in Lagos State.

Sharma, who disclosed that Guinness Nigeria is 75 years old, restated his organisation’s commitment to Lagos State.

He said bringing the Premier League Trophy to Lagos will give football fans across the State the opportunity to pose with the trophy is a great feat.

“I am very pleased to be here today to present the Premier League Trophy to football fans and give them the opportunity to stand next to the trophy. We make sure the trophy comes to Nigeria because this is one of the largest sporting nations. So, there is no way this trophy cannot be presented to the Nigerians for them to feel it,” he said.

Sharma said his organisation is honoured to be part of Nigeria, noting that the establishment of Guinness in Nigeria show how important is the country and therefore urged Nigerians to believe in Nigeria’s potential as a country.

Classic Car Club of Nigeria Marks 10th Anniversary with ‘Nostalgic Lagos’ at Lagos Polo Club

The Classic Car Club of Nigeria has celebrated its 10th anniversary with Nostalgic Lagos, a classic car exhibition held on October 1 at the Lagos Polo Club, Ikoyi, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s Independence Day. The event brought together classic car collectors, enthusiasts, families, friends and distinguished guests for a celebration of vintage automobiles and the memories, history and heritage associated with them. Organised around the theme of nostalgia and heritage, the event featured an impressive collection of classic automobiles, alongside a drive and showcase, fashion and style, and family-oriented activities. The celebration provided guests with an opportunity to view some of the country’s cherished vintage vehicles while connecting with the stories behind them. Speaking at the event, Yomi Badejo-Okusanya, a classic car collector and one of the event’s sponsors, said the vehicles represented more than their physical and mechanical value, noting that many were connected to personal memories and significant moments in people’s lives. “For some of us, it’s nostalgic. We carry fond memories of some of those cars. Some of them took us to school, some of them were driven by our parents, some by our uncles, and some of them we owned when we started. So every car has a history and tells a story. That’s the most important thing.” Badejo-Okusanya, who described himself as a storyteller and public relations consultant, stressed the importance of preserving the history represented by the vehicles. “You must treasure heritage, treasure tradition. There can’t be a future without a history. So this is the history that we carry here.” He added that every vehicle at the exhibition had a story, pointing to his own Mercedes-Benz, which he described as “Obokun,” and recalling its significance during the period when it was introduced in Nigeria. “Every single one has a history and I can tell you the history, the story. Every single one has a story.” According to him, the appeal of classic cars extends beyond ownership, as the vehicles provide an opportunity for people to reconnect with different periods of Nigeria’s history and share experiences across generations. Dapo Otunla, Chairman and Co-founder of the Classic Car Club of Nigeria, said the Club’s activities have continued to bring together people who share a passion for classic automobiles, including enthusiasts who do not own vintage cars themselves. “It’s the kind of thing where we come together with our cars, friends and affiliates. Even people who don’t own cars join us. We just enjoy the time, admire the cars and share experiences,” Otunla said. Founded in 2016, the Classic Car Club of Nigeria has grown over the past decade into a community of more than 120 members, organising classic car drives, exhibitions and social gatherings that promote the appreciation and preservation of vintage automobiles. The anniversary celebration also highlighted the role of classic cars in preserving Nigeria’s motoring heritage. Many of the vehicles displayed at Nostalgic Lagos were once familiar sights on Nigerian roads and remain associated with different generations and periods of the country’s social history. The Club has also continued to advocate for greater recognition of classic motoring as part of Nigeria’s cultural and tourism offering, with Otunla previously calling for increased support to develop classic car exhibitions and activities across Nigeria and the wider West African region. Nostalgic Lagos was particularly significant as it coincided with Nigeria’s Independence Day, providing an opportunity for guests to reflect on the country’s journey while celebrating vehicles that have formed part of its history....
