Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate for 2023, has disclosed the reason behind his visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari. Earlier, the Daily Trust had reported that Atiku, a former vice president, had paid Buhari a visit at his Daura residence in Katsina State on Saturday.
Atiku was reportedly accompanied on his visit by Senator Aminu Tambuwal, the recently appointed governor of Sokoto State, and other PDP officials. Atiku disclosed on his X (formerly Twitter) profile on Saturday that he paid ‘Sallah respect’ by visiting the former Nigerian leader.
He wrote: “Accompanied by some stakeholders of our great party, the PDP, we visited the Daura residence of former President Muhammadu Buhari to pay a courtesy call and offer Sallah homage.”
Barely three days have passed since Atiku paid visits to the homes of former military leaders of state, Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, in Minna, Niger State. “Today, I paid Sallah homage to former Heads of State Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) and Gen. Abdusalami at their residences in Minna, Niger State,” Atiku had written in a post on X, announcing the earlier visits.
The visits have intensified rumors that Atiku is getting ready to run for president in 2027. Atiku had promised in May to keep running for president for as long as he is well. The statement was made by the former vice president in the midst of efforts to unite with Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, and other political groups.
