Ibrahim Musa Gusau’s presidency at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been marked by unfulfilled promises and a lack of progress, sparking concerns among stakeholders and fans. Initially welcomed with optimism in September 2022, Gusau’s leadership has failed to live up to expectations, leaving Nigerian football in a state of disarray.
Upon assuming office, Gusau inherited a federation grappling with controversies, financial difficulties, and lackluster international performances. Hopes were high that his tenure would usher in positive changes and revitalize Nigerian football. However, his administration has been marred by incompetence, nepotism, and a lack of clear direction.
Critics have pointed to nepotism and favoritism in key appointments within the NFF as a significant issue. Close associates and friends of Gusau have been given pivotal roles, including leading crucial committees like the Technical Committee and Marketing/Sponsorship Committee. This has raised doubts about the fairness and transparency of the selection process within the federation.
The handling of the coaching staff for the national team, particularly the Super Eagles, has also faced scrutiny. Following the departure of former coach Jose Pesiro, the team has been without a substantive coach for an extended period. The appointment of underqualified individuals like Finidi George has failed to yield desired results, while negotiations with German coach Bruno Labbadia have hit roadblocks, underscoring a lack of strategic planning in team management.
Financial mismanagement has been a significant concern during Gusau’s tenure. Despite a substantial allocation of 12 billion Naira, later revised to 17 billion Naira, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to settle outstanding player allowances and bonuses dating back to 2019, the NFF has failed to disburse the funds, raising questions about financial accountability and transparency.
Allegations of nepotism and bias have also tainted the recruitment of NFF staff and the appointment of coaches for the Age Grade national teams, further undermining confidence in Gusau’s leadership.
The recent praise of Gusau’s leadership in the Annual General Assembly’s communique has been met with skepticism and criticism. The gap between the commendation and the actual performance of the NFF under Gusau’s leadership has deepened disillusionment among stakeholders and fans.
Additionally, a contentious issue before the NFF Annual General Assembly was the proposed contract extension of the NFF’s General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi. Accusations of commercializing employment and compromising the federation’s effectiveness have been leveled against Sanusi, raising concerns about transparency and accountability within the NFF.
Furthermore, concerns have been raised about the league’s reform under Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, with legal disputes over title and broadcast rights with Total Promotion. Transparency and accountability in these matters have been called into question, adding to the challenges facing Nigerian football under Gusau’s leadership.
As Nigerian football grapples with these pressing issues, the future of Gusau’s leadership at the NFF remains uncertain. Will he be able to address these challenges and steer the federation in a positive direction, or will his tenure be remembered as a missed opportunity for Nigerian football? Only time will reveal the true legacy of Ibrahim Musa Gusau’s presidency at the NFF.
