The 2024/25 Premier League has passed the halfway mark, with 199 thrilling matches already completed. Showmax customers across Africa have witnessed some of the finest football moments, including 593 goals and seven hat-tricks, as teams battle for supremacy.
This season has delivered emotional and scintillating highlights that will stay etched in the memories of fans worldwide. Here, we highlight the top five moments after Matchday 20:
1. Justin Kluivert’s Hat-Trick of Penalties
On November 30, Justin Kluivert made Premier League history by becoming the first player to score a hat-trick of penalties in a single match. The AFC Bournemouth forward converted twice from the spot in the first half before sealing his historic third penalty in the 74th minute against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.
Kluivert became the fifth player to take three penalties in a Premier League match, but the first to convert all three successfully. Prior to his record, there had been 69 instances of players scoring two penalties in a single Premier League game, but never three.
2. Salah Joins Premier League’s Elite Goalscorers
On January 5, Mohamed Salah joined an elite group of players after scoring in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United. The goal marked Salah’s 18th in the current campaign and his 175th overall in the Premier League, putting him level with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry in the all-time scorers’ chart.
Salah now sits in joint-seventh place on the all-time list, just two goals behind Frank Lampard. Additionally, he has cemented his place in Liverpool’s history as the third-highest scorer for the club, with 232 goals in 376 games.
3. Cole Palmer’s First-Half Scoring Record
On September 28, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer delivered a historic performance, becoming the first player in Premier League history to score four goals in the first half of a match.
Palmer’s remarkable goals came in the 21st, 28th, 31st, and 41st minutes during Chelsea’s dominant display against Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge. The four-goal spree, spanning just 19 minutes and 57 seconds, will be remembered as one of the most electrifying performances of the season.
4. Spurs End Manchester City’s Unbeaten Home Streak
November 23 was a night to forget for Manchester City as Tottenham Hotspur delivered a stunning 4-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium. This marked the end of City’s incredible 52-match unbeaten home run in all competitions and a personal low point for Pep Guardiola, who suffered five consecutive losses for the first time in his managerial career.
James Maddison scored twice in seven first-half minutes, while Pedro Porro added a third shortly after the break. Brennan Johnson’s injury-time goal sealed a humiliating defeat for City and an unforgettable night for Spurs.
5. Haaland’s “Stay Humble” Rant
One of the season’s most talked-about moments came off the pitch during a fiery 2-2 draw between Manchester City and Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium. After the match, Erling Haaland was captured on video telling Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to “stay humble, eh.”
The quote quickly became a global meme, but weeks later, it seemed life had a lesson for Haaland. Manchester City endured a poor run of form, winning just one of their next 12 matches in all competitions. Haaland himself faced a rare goal drought, adding irony to his infamous advice.
As the Premier League season continues to unfold, fans can look forward to more memorable moments and thrilling action.
