Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent Nollywood actor and political commentator, has accused President Bola Tinubu of favoring his ethnic group in federal appointments while disguising them as regional inclusivity.
In an interview with SYMFONI TV, Okonkwo expressed concern over what he described as a pattern of appointing individuals from the Yoruba ethnic group, particularly from the Southwest, even when the appointments are presented as being from the North. He argued that this approach undermines the principle of equitable representation in Nigeria’s diverse political landscape.
Okonkwo pointed to key appointments such as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Attorney General of the Federation, the Chief of Defense Staff, and the Chief of Army Staff as examples of this trend. He claimed that although these individuals are labeled as northerners, they are in fact of Yoruba origin.
He said, “Look at what Tinubu is doing. Apart from the preponderance of the southwest people he has appointed, he has now shifted when people started crying so much he has now shifted to North Central, and he’s still appointing the Yoruba but claiming they are from the north.”
