For over a decade, the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) have stood as a benchmark for excellence in African film and television. Beyond the glitz, it has become an annual checkpoint for the industry, a way to take stock of growth, creativity, and cultural influence. For some, it’s the recognition that validates years of hard work. For others, it’s a milestone that pushes their careers to the next level.
But the 2025 edition reflects something more, a clear shift. While the influence of established filmmakers and actors remains central to the night, this year’s nominee list signals a broader change, a growing platform for new voices. There’s an intentional mix of industry veterans and first-time nominees, many of whom represent the next generation of African storytellers.
Take Gbubemi Ejeye, nominated for Best Lead Actress for Farmer’s Bride. It’s a breakout moment that shows how emerging talents are stepping confidently into leading roles. In the same spirit, Darasimi Nnadi’s nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Aburo also stands out.
This transition is also evident behind the camera. Films like Gone, Everything Light Touches, and The Immersive Alarm, produced by the MultiChoice Talent Factory, highlight a new wave of trained filmmakers who are already contributing to the industry in meaningful ways.
In the Best Director category, names like Robert O. Peters (Skeleton Coast) and Daniel Emeka Oriahi (The Weekend) reflect a move towards storytelling that feels fresh, relevant, and globally aware. These directors are not only producing quality work; they’re shaping a new creative direction for African cinema.
What matters more than the names on the list is what they represent: a generational handover already in motion. This year’s nominations signal a quiet but clear rebirth, one where seasoned icons stand alongside rising voices. The AMVCA isn’t just reflecting change; it’s actively shaping it, honouring legacy while making space for the next wave of talent set to move the industry forward.
