The senator representing Ondo South Senatorial District, Jimoh Ibrahim, has stated that former President Muhammadu Buhari did not support President Bola Tinubu during the 2022 All Progressives Congress presidential primary election.
He made this known in an interview with Channels TV, while responding to former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi’s recent remark that if the opposition believes Tinubu will hand over power to them, they are wasting their time. Amaechi made this statement at a two-day National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria.
Jimoh Ibrahim recalled that before the party primaries, there were claims that Amaechi was the likely winner. He, however, questioned the actual votes Amaechi received, highlighting that despite expectations, Tinubu emerged victorious by relying on data science. Ibrahim emphasized that Buhari did not support Tinubu at the primaries. He clarified that a lack of support does not equate to betrayal, but could simply mean a difference in preference.
He said, “Amaechi, didn’t he contest election as president? What was the vote he collected? But that time, they said he was going to win. What was the vote? Tinubu came with data, we used data science to win that election? Did Buhari support Tinubu at the primaries? I’m telling you clearly that he didn’t support him. Not supporting somebody doesn’t mean betrayal, it might mean you don’t like his face, the key fact which you cannot dispute is there.”
