Allegations Emerge Over Reported Access to Senate Chamber by Senate President’s Wife; Calls for Investigation Grow

Questions are being raised over an unholy access to the Senate Chamber of the National Assembly by Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, wife of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, with growing calls for the incident to be independently investigated and clarified by the appropriate authorities.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the incident allegedly occurred between approximately 10:20 am and 11:30 am on Saturday, July 4, 2026. The source claimed that Mrs. Akpabio, accompanied by several individuals described as marabouts and others who were not members or staff of the Senate, gained access to the Red Chamber outside normal operating hours through DSP Henry Okibe

The source further alleged that the group remained inside the chamber for nearly 50 minutes before leaving. At the time of publication, however, no official evidence has been made public to substantiate these claims, and there has been no public response from Mrs. Akpabio, the Office of the Senate President, or any of the individuals allegedly involved.

The reported incident has prompted questions about security protocols within the National Assembly. Some lawmakers and observers have called for a comprehensive review of access records, CCTV footage, and the actions of security personnel who were on duty during the period in question.

Given the Senate Chamber’s status as one of Nigeria’s most sensitive democratic institutions, analysts argue that any allegation of unauthorized access if established through an independent investigation would raise significant concerns about institutional security and require appropriate corrective measures.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the National Assembly management, the Senate leadership, nor the relevant security agencies had issued an official statement confirming or denying the alleged incident.

In view of the seriousness of the allegations, observers say a transparent and impartial investigation would be necessary to establish the facts and reassure both lawmakers and the public about the integrity of security and life within the National Assembly.
